½ Point Separates 7A Powers Thompson & Vestavia Hills Heading into Final Day

65th AHSAA State Wrestling Concludes Saturday

HUNTSVILLE – The AHSAA 65th State Wrestling Championships heads into Championship Saturday with only a half point separating the two most dominant Class 7A teams in the last decade.
   Defending Class 7A state champion Thompson posted  137-point total Friday and qualified seven wrestlers in the state finals. Vestavia Hills posted 136.5 points to trail the Warriors and qualified six wrestlers in Saturday’s finals.
    The close race in the large-school division will be decided most likely in four head-to-head finals Saturday. Meanwhile,  Gardendale piled up 160.5 points in Class 6A through Friday’s winner’s bracket semifinals and consolation division semifinals to build a 40-point lead over Benjamin Russell, which heads into the final day with 120.5 points. Oxford was third at 105.5 and defending champion McAdory had 100.
    Arab had an even bigger lead after Friday’s wrestling in Class 1A/5A. The Knights piled up 176.5 points with Jasper second with 107 – 60.5 points behind the leaders. Ranburne had 96.5 points for third and Alexandria was fourth with 80.
     Thompson and Vestavia will meet in the 106-pound finals as well as 126-pound, 152-pound and160-pound finals. Blaise Albarado (16-0) reached the 106-pound finals for the Warriors and will meet Zach Flurry (32-3) in the 106-pound finals. James Latona (46-5), who won the 113-pound title last year as a freshman, will meet the Rebels’ Bryant Segars (43-6) in the 126-pound championship match; Thompson’s Will Miller (45-4) faces Vestavia’s Chandler Merrill (27-8) t 152 pounds; and Thompson’s Ashunti Perry (29-9), who was the 170-pound state runner last season, faces Vestavia’s John Edwards (37-4) in the 160-pound finals.
    The Warriors also have Yanni Vines (47-4) in the 113-pound championship match, Emmanuel Oliver (37-4) in the 132-pound finals; and Michael Jackson (40-5) in the 195-pound finals.  The Rebels have Jack Lamey (33-12) in the 145-pound finals; and Sam Willoughby (36-5) is competing in the 170-pound championship match.
   Defending champions back in the finals include, in Class 7A: Spain Park 285-pounder Jaxon Bast (58-5); Class 6A: Oxford’s Jakob Chisolm (22-0), last year’s 145-pound champ, in the 138-pound finals; Yellow Jackets teammate Reed Hill (56-2), the state champ at 152 pounds in 2019, battling for the 160-pound title; and Wetumpka’s Mason Blackwell (62-2) in the 182-pound finals. He won at 170 pounds last year en route to a 72-2 finish. 
   In Class 1A/5A, Moody’s Cory Land (55-0), who finished 47-0 in 2019 to win the 106-pound title, is in the finals again but this time two classes higher at 120 pounds. Jaden New of Alexandria (51-0) won the 132-pound state championship over runner-up, Weaver’s Cody Souder (40-6), last season and the two wrestlers each bumped up two weight divisions this season and will battle again the 145-pound championship match.
    Land, who currently owns a 102-match winning streak, faces a formidable opponent William Walker if Satsuma in the 120-pound title match.  Walker is 55-1 on the season.
   The state finals in all three divisions get underway at the Von Braun Center at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, with the finals getting underway at 9 a.m.
