BIRMINGHAM – McGill-Toolen Catholic High School sophomore Skyler Bumpers recorded 14 kills to earn MVP honors Thursday as McGill-Toolen Catholic downed Bob Jones 3-0 in the Class 7A finals of the 48th annual AHSAA State Volleyball Championships at the CrossPlex’s Bill Harris Arena here.
The state title was the second in a row for the Dirty Dozen won its second Class 7A state volleyball title in a row and the school’s 21st overall since the AHSAA installed volleyball as a championship sport in 1971. The finals match with Bob Jones was also a rematch of the 2017 championship match.
McGill-Toolen jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead winning 25-17 and 25-8 in the first two sets before the Patriots battled back to tie the third 23-23 and holding the serve. The Dirty Dozen picked up the next two points, however, to close out the win.
Senior Kenya McQuirter, who earned MVP honors in 2017, had 11 kills and eight digs, and Imani Nicholson added nine kills for McGill-Toolen. Senior setter Lillie Fromdahl drew raves from Coach Kate Wood for her leadership on and off the court. Fromdahl had 36 assists and seven serves. McQuirter, Fromdahl and Nicholson earned all-tourney honors with Bumpers.
Pacing Coach April Marsh’s Patriots (37-11) was Junita Monteiro Pai , who had a team-high eight kills and five digs. Setter LeighAnna Tralongo also had 14 assists.
McGill-Toolen closed the season losing only one match to an in-state – dropping a 2-1 decision to Mountain Brook in the Margaret Blalock regular-season tourney. The Dirty Dozen did not lose another set versus in-state competition all year.
The five remaining state finals will be played today with all being live-streamed by the NFHS Network.
