BIRMINGHAM – Pleasant Home High School downed Athens Bible 25-17, 25-13, 25-20 to capture the school’s first-ever AHSAA girls’ state championship in the final match of the 48th Class 4A State Volleyball finals held at the CrossPlex’s Bill Harris Arena Thursday.
The Eagles of Coach Tony Wilson jumped out to a quick win in the first set and won in three straight sets. It was Pleasant Home’s first trip to trip to the championship match in four trips to the State Tourney.
Senior River Baldwin had 17 kills and three blocked shots to earn MVP honors for the Eagles. She also had a team-high 14 digs. Sarah Kathryn Guilford added 12 kills and 10 digs, Peyton Huckabaa had 17 assists and six digs and Bella Worley had 12 assists.
Athens Bible (45-11) reached the finals winning s grueling five-set battle over Faith Christian Wednesday night in the semifinals. Senior Kyndal Barksdale had eight kills, Izzy Todd had seven and Mackenzie Davis had six in the finals versus Pleasant Home. Davis also had 20 assists. The Trojans won Class 1A state titles in 1989, 2009 and 2014.
