AHSAA State Baseball Championships Class 6A State Baseball Championship Series

Cullman 1-9, Chelsea 0-4
MONTGOMERY – Cullman High School swept Chelsea in  the Class 6A State Baseball Championship Series Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium 1-0 and 9-4 to claim the Bearcats’ fifth state championship in school history.
Cullman took the momentum from winning game one 1-0 as Coach Brent Patterson’s team pounded out 12 hits – quite a contrast to just one hit in game one.
Ben Hollis had three hits, scored twice and had one RBI in the final game to pace Cullman’s active bats. Catcher Nicholas Braswell also had two hits and two RBIs and winning pitcher Peyton Colvard stroked a triple, scored twice and had one RBI. He also pitched the complete-game win scattering eight hits, allowing only two earned runs, walking three and striking out three. He earned Class 6A State Baseball Championship Series MVP.
Niklas Fondren also had two hits for Cullman.
Chelsea, which managed only two hits in game one, totaled eight in game two with center fielder Bennett Norton getting two hits. Nolan Forehand and William Peacock also had a single and RBI each.

GAME 1: Cullman 1, Chelsea 0
Cullman third baseman Brennen Norton broke up Chelsea left-hander Connor Ball’s no-hit bid in the first game of the Class 6A State Baseball Championship Series Friday night with a double down the left-field line with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning and scored the only run of the game moments later on Peyton Colvard’s grounder that got away from Hornets shortstop Nolan Forehand to give the Bearcats a 1-0 victory.
Cullman pitcher Dylan Wallace tossed a two-hitter, walked two and struck out six to get the shutout win. Ball (9-4) pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowed the lone hit, one unearned run and struck out six. He only faced 22 batters.

Class 7A State Baseball Championship Series
Game 1: McGill-Toolen Catholic 8, Bob Jones 6
The Class 7A series opened Friday with McGill-Toolen Catholic (31-7) beating Bob Jones (41-9) 6-4 in game one at Paterson Field. The 7A series will conclude Saturday at Riverwalk Stadium with game 2 at 10 a.m., and game 3, if needed, will follow.
All AHSAA Championship Series games are being live-streamed by the NFHS Network over its subscriber-based platform. For more information, go to www.nfhsnetwork.com.
McGill-Toolen took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as the Yellow Jackets hit for the cycle -- with senior pitching sensation Chandler Best slamming a solo homer, Vinny Martini slugged an RBI triple, Spencer Hadley had an RBI double and Jacob Huff had a single.
Hadley doubled in two runs in the top of the third to give Coach Tim Becker’s Yellow Jackets a 5-0 lead.
Bob Jones, coached by Jared Smith,  tagged Best for two runs in the bottom of the third doubles from Caden Rose and Cam Hill and an RBI single from Dylan Ray.

The Patriots rallied in the final inning to score three runs – a rally ignited by Mitchell Daly’s two-out triple, followed by a double by John Riley and a single by Slate Alford. Best, however, settled down and struck out the next batter to seal the win.
Best (10-1) scattered nine hits in the complete-game effort, walked two and struck out seven. Austin East started for Bob Jones, went 2 1/3 innings and got the loss. The Patriots got a solid relief performance from Nick Brown, who hurled the final 4 2/3 innings, gave up four hits, three runs and struck out four.
The two teams meet at Riverwalk Stadium Saturday morning for game two of the Best-of-3 series. Should a third game be necessary, it will follow approximately 30 minutes after completion of game two.
