AHSAA State Bowling Championships Conclude at Pelham Southside Girls, Buckhorn Boys Capture State Championships at Oak Mountain Lanes

PELHAM – Southside-Gadsden won the AHSAA Girls’ State Bowling Championship for the second straight season and Buckhorn captured the boys’ state title for the first time in school history as the third annual AHSAA State Boys’ and Girls’ Bowling Championships concluded at  Pelham’s Oak Mountain Lanes Friday.
Southside, coached by Zachary Blume, beat Stanhope Elmore in the championship match Friday afternoon by 101 pins, 1,408 to 1,307. The Lady Panthers outscored the Mustangs 918-794 in the traditional round and then overcame a 185-148 deficit in the second Baker format game to close with a 177 to seal the win. Stanhope also posted a 177 but the 124-pin deficit in the traditional game was too much to overcome. Ashlee Hull rolled a 228 in the traditionalgame and Grace Ann Clontz, a 226, for the Panthers. Kacey Marshal had a 210 for Stanhope Elmore.
Stanhope Elmore reached the finals with a 1,302-1,282 win over Sparkman in the semis. Southside used another strong traditional round to beat Auburn 1,302 -1,153 in the other semifinal match. Freshman Jessica Clontz rolled a 194 to pace the Panthers.
Macey Fields of Capitol School bowled a 231 in the first round of the championship bracket Friday for the top individual game for the girls. Thompson, which captured top seed on Thursday, was eliminated by Auburn in the quarterfinals, 1129-1,077.

Buckhorn Beats Vestavia Hills in Finals

The Bucks finished strong in the traditional round of the finals with junior Jackson Stiles rolling three strikes on the final frame to close a big Rebels lead to reduce a 100-pin lead to just 69 on the way to a 1,547-1,493 victory to claim the championship. Coach Brittney Carnell’s Bucks rode that momentum into the Baker games winning 233-166 in the first one, 194-189 in the second and 224-173 in the final game. Stiles finished the state tournament with a 1,578 series total for the seven traditional games, best in the meet, and finished with a 212 in the championship match. The Rebels, coached by Todd Evans, were led by Boris Lu, who had a seven-game series of 1,505 – second only to Stiles.

Vestavia Hills, which captured top seed on Thursday, beat Thompson in the semifinals 1,685-1,503 and Buckhorn downed Grissom by just 21 pins 1,477-1,456.

Malcolm Porter of Southside-Gadsden rolled the high traditional game on Friday with a 278 in a first-round loss to Vestavia Hills.
