CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Addison 3, Winston County 2

    BIRMINGHAM – For the second straight year Addison High School faced a county rival in the state finals … and for the second straight year Coach Kayla Woodard’s Bulldogs (54-10) emerged as state champs.
    Addison rallied from a 2-1 deficit after three sets to beat arch-rival Winston County 25-21, 20-25, 19-25, 25-16, 15-8 Thursday Morning at Bill Harris Arena to capture the 2018 AHSAA Class 1A state volleyball championship. The Yellow Jackets (33-15) beat Addison in the Winston County tournament earlier in the regular season to become County champs.
   The finals pitted two schools from Winston County in the championship match for the second time in AHSAA history – Addison beat county rival Meek in the 1A finals in 2017. Both were proud moments for the Winston County School System.
  For Coach Kayla Woodard’s Bulldogs (51-8), the championship was sixth in a row dating back to 2013. Addison has won three 2A crowns and three 1A titles in that span. Winston County won the 3A state title in 2001.
    Addison junior middle hitter Savannah Manley  had 20 kills to earn Most Outstanding Player honors for the 2A state tourney. Sophomore Callie Crider had 14 kills, Macey Butler and Natalie Jefferson had 23 assists each for the Bulldogs. Destiny Walker had 22 digs, Tess Alvin had 20 and Butler had 16. Manley and Brie Orey also had two service aces.
    Winston County’s strong duo of senior Saige Blanton and junior Mackenzie Blackwood helped the Jackets build a 2-1 lead in the final match with outstanding play up front. Blanton had 18 killd and 33 digs and Blackwood delivered 15 kills, 17 assists and 20 digs. Katelyn Bullock added 18 digs and 12 assists, and Elle Donaldson managed 17 digs and served two aces.
     The six remaining state finals will be played today with all being live-streamed by the NFHS Network.
