Class 4A State Baseball Championship Series Game 2: Brooks 6, Sipsey Valley 4 (Brooks wins 4A state title)

AHSAA State Baseball Championships

MONTGOMERY – Junior pitcher Carson Villalta persevered through two lightning delays and late Sipsey Valley rally to hurl the complete-game 6-4 victory Thursday night in game two of the AHSAA Class 4A State Baseball Championship Series at Riverwalk Stadium. The triumph gave Coach Jacob Fowler’s Lions (27-8) the sweep and the school’s first state baseball title in its rich sports history.
Villalta allowed six hits, four runs, walked one and struck out eight in a journeyman effort. Despite the lightning delays that turned the 4 o’clock finals into a three-hour, 39-minute  marathon, His sharp fastball was still consistently hitting the low 80s in the final inning as he retired the side to seal the win.
Sipsey Valley (20-17) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Brandon Moore doubled and scored Jackson Smith’s RBI single. The Bears of Coach Bobby Moore got three of their six hits in that initial rally.
The Lions posted three runs off starter Caleb Junkin in the top of the second inning with three hits coupled with two Bears errors to take a 3-1 lead. Lake Spurgeon delivered a two-out, two-run double to plate two runs.
Junkin, who hurled five innings allowing six hits and striking out five, and Villalta were very sharp over the next three innings. Sipsey Valley rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Junkin started the rally with a lead-off double. Brandon Moore drove in two runs with his second double of the night and Cade Whitley drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly.
The momentum shifted to Brook after the next lightning delay. The Lions posted three runs in the top of the sixth – scoring the first run on a throwing error and the second on a balk. Charlie Crowley singled in the final run to give Brooks the lead for good.
Spurgeon finished with two doubles and two RBIs for Brooks and Carson Daniel had two hits and scored two runs.  Brandon Moore, son of the head coach, had two hits, scored two runs and also had two RBIs.
