Class 5A State Baseball Championship Series Game 1: Briarwood Christian 5, Springville 4

MONTGOMERY – Briarwood Christian scored the winning run in the top of the sixth inning on a wild pitch as the Lions (20-14) of Coach Steve Renfroe took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series over Springville (32-7) in the AHSAA Class 5A State Baseball Championship Series at Paterson Field Thursday night.
Both teams weathered lightning delays with some clutch play from start to finish.
The Lions collected 12 hits off three Springville pitchers, and Coach Jonathan Ford’s Tigers managed nine off two Briarwood hurlers.
Briarwood scored two runs in the top of the first thanks to RBI singles by Wesley Helms and Sam Hamner. Springville got one run back when center fielder and lead-off hitter Brandon Daniels slammed a home run over the center-field wall. Briarwood stretched its lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth but the Tigers rallied to tie the game with Brant Brown slugging a homer for the big hit.
The Lions made it 4-3 in the top of the fifth on Hamner’s RBI single, and the Tigers tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Braden Hughes. Hamner finished with three hits and two RBIs for Briarwood. Helms, Carson McKinney, Blake McKenna and Tyler Waugh each had two hits for the Lions. Ivan Cornelius and Max Harrison had two hits for Springville.
Winning pitcher Noah Whatley yielded nine hits over 6 1/3 innings and struck out four. McKinney got the final two outs in the seventh inning to get the save. Springville starting pitcher Cornelius pitched 4 2/3 innings, gave up 10 hits, four runs and struck out two. Reliever Noah Hanrahan pitched 1 1/3 innings to get the loss.
