Defending Champs Shine in First Day at AHSAA Class 1A/2A/3A Track Championships Friday

CULLMAN – Defending state champion American Christian Academy’s boys and girls led the Class 3A competition after the first day at the 2018 AHSAA Class 1A/2A/3A State Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Cullman High School’s Oliver Woodard Stadium Friday.
   Coach Charles Tiller’s Patriots totaled 63 points in the 3A to lead the 3A boys’ team standings. Mobile Christian had 32 and Bayside Academy 31. The ACA girls held a five-point lead over T.R Miller, 53-48 heading into Saturday’s competition. Montgomery Academy was third with 42.
   In Class 2A, Falkville’s boys had 64 points, Altamont 40 and St. Bernard 23 after the first day. Defending state champion Altamont’s girls led with 50 points and Falkville had 36. St. Bernard was third with 34 and Lanett 25. In Class 1A, Whitesburg Christian’s defending state champion girls had 68 points with Westminster-Oak Mountain in second place with 40. Addison had 22. Westminster’s boys, the 2017 state champs, led Wadley 38-31 after Friday’s completed events. Marion County was third with 24.
     Due to potential weather concerns, coaches, administrators, teams and spectators, please take note of the following adjustments to Saturday’s schedule of events. Saturday’s running events will begin at 8 a.m., with a rolling schedule for the other running events. The order of events will remain the same. Saturday’s field events will start at 8 and also operate on a rolling schedule.

     Coach David Carrell’s team set two records in the 4x800-meter relay competition.  The girls clocked 9:59.62 to become the first 1A girls’ relay team to come under the 10-minute mark at state competition. The record performance for Coach Dave Carrell’s team broke the previous 1A state record (10:06.74) set by St. Bernard in 2015. The Westminster boys’ 4x800 relay team was not to be outdone, however, setting a new 1A boys’ state meet mark with a winning tome of 8L28.66. Falkville had held the record (8:31.99) since 2014.

   At least six records fell Friday including:
Josiah Harry, Mobile Christian: Set a new Class 3A state discus record with a winning throw of 179 feet, 3 inches. The old record (165-08), set in 2017, was set by Matt Cahoon of Holly Pond. He also finished second in the javelin competition.
Emma Cape, Whitesburg Christian: Won the Class 1A high jump title with a 5-03.25 leap, breaking the Class 1A state record established 32 years earlier in the process. The old mark (5-03) was set by Julie Prueitt of Addison in 1996.
Emee Baldwin, Addison: Set a new Class 1A girls’ javelin record clearing 10 feet, 8 inches. The old mark (10-00) was set in 2015 by Summer Stewart of Meek.
Kaitlin Hill, Loachapoka: Set a 1A state record in the long jump with her winning leap of 18:01.00. Her effort best the old mark (17:03.50), which was set in 2014 by another Loachapoka athlete Kerimee Vinson.
    Other top performances noted were:

CLASS 1A GIRLS
1,600 METER RUN:
Hannah Tarwater of Whitesburg Christian won with a time of 5:14.63.
400-METER DASH: Whitesburg Christian’s Mattie Weeks edged Rashni Walker of Ellwood Christian and Sarah Kate Lipperd of Westminster-Oak Mountain with a winning time of 59.30 seconds. Walker (59.56) and Lipperd (59.57) were less than a second behind the winning time.

CLASS 2A GIRLS
1,600 METER RUN: Leahrose Mami of St. Bernard clocked 5:34.32 to capture the event.
400-METER DASH: Falkville’s Kari Watts had the winning time of 1:00.71.
JAVELIN: Tirsah Morris of Section won with a throw of 102-09.

CLASS 3A GIRLS
400-METER DASH: Ja’Niyah Boykin of Mobile Christian clocked 59.36 to win the 3A race.
1,600 METER RUN: American Christian’s Harper Roberts ran the distance in 5:23.34 to take first place.
LONG JUMP:
Amber Mason of Bayside Academy won with a leap of 17-05.75.
TRIPLE JUMP: Altamont’s Kalia Todd had the winning jump of 35-03.50 to win the event by almost two feet.
HIGH JUMP: Pleasant Valley’s Rachel Faucett cleared 5-04 to win the high jump competition.

CLASS 1A BOYS
1,600 METER RUN: Westminster-Oak Mountain captured the first three spots in the boys’ race with Nate Collins winning with a time of 4:29.99. Hunter Wright (4:40.63) was second and Daniel Collins (4:45.71) finished third.
400-METER DASH: Rikishi Buchanan of Wadley clocked 50.19 to take the championship.
POLE VAULT:
Braden Pyron of Marion County cleared 9-00 to win the 1A title.
TRIPLE JUMP: Taquavian Drake of Wadley won the event with a 43-09.50 best leap.

CLASS 2A BOYS
400-METER DASH: Tavias Anderson of Sheffield won the race with a winning time of 48.57 seconds, just shy of the Class 2A state record (48.40) set in 1999 by Adrian Green of West Morgan.
1,600 METER RUN: Andrew Sweeney gave St. Bernard a sweep of the 1,600 with a winning time of 4:35.18. The school also won the girls’ title too with Leahrose Mami taking first.
SHOT PUT:
Tykeem Doss of Aliceville won with a throw of 47-05.
LONG JUMP: Craig Kinsey’s leap of 21-06.25 took first place for the Abbeville long jumper.

 

CLASS 3A BOYS
400-METER DASH:
Luke Skinner and David Hodgson of American Christian finished 1-2 in the event with Skinner clocking 49.64 to just miss setting a new 3A state record. Tavias Anderson of Sheffield, who won the 2A race Friday, set the 3A mark (49.46) in 2016 when the Bulldogs were in the 3A competition.
1,600 METER RUN: Matisse Miller of Pleasant Valley won the event with a photo finish over David Barrett of American Christian and Chase Prater of Elkmont. Miller’s time was 4:34.06, Barrett clocked 4:34.74 and Prater, 4:35.63.
JAVELIN: Mobile Christian’s Andres Fox threw the javelin 180 feet to win the event.
