HUNTSVILLE – Defending state champion Thompson High School posted 151.5 points Friday in the first day of Class 7A competition to shatter the AHSA State Championship meet record (140.0) set by Coach Sean Weltzin’s Warriors in 2015. The team record was one of several that stood at the end of the day as the AHSAA’s 64 th State Championships concluded day two of the three-day meet at the Von Braun Center. The 7A points total was set originally by Thompson over both days – in the first year the AHSAA had installed the new classification consisting of the largest 32 schools in the state. The 7A division qualifies only eight wrestlers in each weight division for the state meet while the 6A and 1A/5A divisions qualify 16. The consolation finals will kick off the action Saturday at 9:30 a.m., and the championship matches are set to start at 11:30 a.m., beginning with the 103-pound finals in all divisions. The state meet will conclude with the 285-pound weight classes. All matches will be streamed by the NFHS Network over its subscriber-based program thanks to its wrestling partner TrackWrestling. Thompson’s “current record” will surely fall Saturday since the Warriors advanced eight to the state finals. Among them is senior Gabe Hixenbaugh (43-3), who will be facing Hoover’s Conner Dubble (27-13) in the 138-pound finals. Hixenbaugh, a four-time state champ, will be striving to become just the seventh wrestler in state history to win five state titles. Chandler Akins (52-6), who has three state titles to his credit, will be in the 126-pound finals against Oak Mountain’s Sullivan Tipton (44-6). Thompson has a commanding lead over Hoover (108.5) and Vestavia Hills (82) in the 7A standings after Friday’s round. Benjamin Russell (128), McAdory (126), Wetumpka (124.5) and defending state champion Oxford (110) were bunched together at the top of 6A standings after Friday’s competition. Moody (132.5) held a slim lead over defending state champion Arab (127) and 2019 duals champion Scottsboro (115) in the 1A/5A division going into Saturday’s finals. Seniors Christian Knop of Alexandria and Steve Bell of McAdory stepped to the forefront Friday as both kept unbeaten streaks alive. Knop, who will be wrestling in the Class 1A/5A 195-pound division in the finals Saturday against Corner sophomore Cole Fuller (48-6), is 70-0 this season and could become the first wrestler in AHSAA history to win four state titles with undefeated records. He has won 234 consecutive matches, the AHSAA state record. The old record (201) was set by another Calhoun County wrestler, Mike Sutton of Weaver from 1999-2004. The national record for consecutive wins, according to the NFHS Record Book, is 260 – set by Hesperia (MN) wrestler Justin Zeerip from 2004-2008. Alex Tsirtsis of Griffin (IN) ranks second with 236. Knop’s total ranks him third. Bell, who improved to 90-0 on the season, tied the AHSAA single-season state record for wins with his semifinal win on Friday. The 132-pound wrestler of McAdory is 90-0 on the year and in the 6A 132-pound class and could become the state’s all-time single season wins leader with a win in the finals Saturday. Macon Edwards of Fultondale finished 90-0 in 2016 to set the mark – which ranks second nationally behind Colton Palmer’s 91-0 season in 2007 at Durham-Riverside (NC). McAdory’s Steve Black (89-1) also has a chance to tie the single-season state record after advancing to the Class 6A 182-pound finals Friday. The will meet senior Noah Barclay of Wetumpka (54-3) in the championship match. The complete championship pairings include:.
