CLASS 3A BOYS’ SEMIFINALS BIRMINGHAM – Westminster Christian used tenacious defense and strong performance by 6-foot-4 senior guard/forward Auston Leslie to beat Bullock County 50-32 in the Class 3A Boys State Basketball Championships semifinals Tuesday as the 97 th AHSAA State Basketball Championships continued at the BJCC Legacy Arena. Veteran Coach Ronnie Stapler, 71, saw his Wildcats (27-4) force 21 turnovers and limited the Hornets to a 2-of-19 shooting performance outside the 3-point arc. Leslie scored 26 points for Westminster, including 10-of-11 at the foul line, added six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Joshua Childers, the Wildcats’ 6-5 post player, added eight points. Bullock County (17-12), coached by Douglas Moore, was anchored by guard Cedric Nichols’ 13 points. De’Vonta Davis added seven points and Jalaceon Green scored six. Westminster, which won its only state title in 2016 in Class 4A, will meet the winner of the Hillcrest-Evergreen vs. Prattville Christian in the 3A state finals Friday at 2:15 p.m. at the BJCC Legacy Arena. Tuesday’s victory was the 783 rd career win for Stapler, who spent most of his coaching career at Grissom High School before coming out of retirement to take over the Westminster program. The AHSAA State Basketball Championships continue Tuesday with the remaining Class 3A girls’ and boys’ semifinals and the Class 4A semis. Classes 5A and 6A play Wednesday and Class 7A semis will be Thursday morning. The remaining schedule will be the state finals. All semifinal games are being live-streamed over the NFHS Network’s subscriber-based program and broadcast over the AHSAA Radio Network.
