Second Round Set for Nov. 17 Class 2A, Region 5 and Class 4A Region 5 Sweep First-Round Games to Advance in AHSAA Playoffs

       MONTGOMERY – Two regions saw all four playoff qualifiers sweep in the first round of 2017 Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) State Football Playoffs this week. Class 2A, Region 5 and Class 4A, Region 5 advanced four teams each to the second round set for Friday, Nov. 17.
     A total of 52 games are slated for round two with Classes 1A through 6A featuring eight games each and Class 7A hosting four contests.
     Class 2A Region 5 champion Lanett (11-0) beat Tanner 41-9, second seed LaFayette (9-2) downed Cleveland 33-19, third seed Reeltown (7-4) topped Region 7 second seed Falkville 17-13 and fourth seed Ranburne (5-6) defeated Region 7 top seed Tarrant 28-12 in first-round action. Next week, Lanett will host Sand Rock (9-2), Lafayette travels to defending state champion Fyffe (11-0), Reeltown hosts Sulligent (10-1) and Ranburne will be at home against Lamar County (7-4).
    Class 4A, Region 5 champion Saks (11-0) downed Westminster Christian 42-21, second seed Jacksonville (8-3) beat Randolph 43-13, third seed Hokes Bluff (9-2) defeated Region 7 runner-up Madison Academy 12-10, and fourth seed Cherokee County (5-6) stopped Region 7 champion Sardis 21-14. Match-ups in round two have Saks at home against Dora (9-2), Jacksonville on the road at Fayette County (9-2), Hokes Bluff at home versus Rogers (11-0) and Cherokee County also at home to face Wilson (10-1).
     Six defending state champions advanced to the second round: Class 1A Maplesville (10-0); Class 2A Fyffe (11-0); Class 3A Piedmont (10-1); Class 5A Beauregard (9-1); Class 6A Ramsay (7-4); and Class 7A Hoover (8-3). Maplesville overcame a 28-28 halftime deadlock to beat Linden 49-28 for the Red Devils’ 33rd win in s row. Fyffe downed Sheffield 48-0 on Thursday for the school’s 500th win overall. The Red Devils also won their 21st game in a row upping the school’s all-time mark to 500-295-13 since starting football in 1933. Piedmont beat Geraldine 26-6 for the Bulldogs’ 10th straight win. Beauregard kicked a 37-yard field goal in the final seconds to beat Greenville 24-21 and extended the Hornets’ current win streak to nine. Ramsay blanked Cullman 14-0 and Hoover snapped a two-game losing streak with 49-7 victory over Sparkman.
    All 18 teams heading into the playoffs unbeaten posted first-round wins: (Class 1A) Georgiana (11-0); Lynn (11-0); Maplesville (10-0); Wadley (10-0); (Class 2A) Fyffe (11-0); Lanett (11-0); (Class 3A) Fultondale (11-0); (Class 4A) Rogers (11-0); Saks (11-0); Class 5A: Briarwood Christian (11-0); Carroll (11-0); (Class 6A) Austin (11-0); Oxford (11-0); Pinson Valley (11-0); (Class 7A) Central-Phenix City (10-0); Hewitt-Trussville (11-0); McGill-Toolen Catholic (11-0); and Thompson (11-0).
    The 2017 state playoffs will culminate with the Super 7 State Championships on the University of Alabama campus at Bryant-Denny Stadium Dec. 6-7-8.
     Raycom Media, which plans to televise one playoff game over the first four playoff rounds, broadcast McGill-Toolen’s 35-14 win over Jeff Davis at Mobile in round one. Raycom will announce its round-two Raycom Game of the Week Monday.  The NFHS Network also plans to live-video stream several games produced by member schools belonging to the NFHS Network School Broadcast Program. A special NFHS Network crew headed by veteran broadcaster Jerry Young will feature Talladega County Central at defending Class 1A state champion Maplesville Friday in the NFHS Network Game of the Week.
