ALABAMA HIGH SCHOOL

ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

STATE CHEER COMPETITION

Dear Cheer Coach,

The Alabama High School Athletic Association is pleased to announce that we will once again be sponsoring the Alabama State Cheer Competition. The AHSAA is proud to be working with Varsity Spirit to sponsor a non-bias, professionally administered event. The AHSAA will be working closely to assure that the judging panel will be representative of all entities of the cheerleading industry.  The competition is open to any school that is a member of the AHSAA.  Teams wishing to qualify for the state finals must do so by attending their assigned super regional as well as scoring 70% of the total score sheet.

The South Super Regional event is scheduled to begin at 10AM on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at the Mobile Civic Center in Mobile, Alabama. (401 Civic Center Dr., Mobile, AL 36602)

The North Super Regional event is scheduled to begin at 10AM on Thursday, November 15, 2018, at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Alabama. (2337 Bessemer Rd., Birmingham, AL 35208)

We hope that you will make plans to come and enjoy a day of fun competition and a chance at the state cheerleading title. All teams must be registered no later than Wednesday, October 3, 2018.

The State Finals is scheduled to begin at 9AM on Saturday, December 15, 2018, at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Alabama. (801 Main St NW, Hanceville, AL 35077)

Traditional Routine format is a maximum time of 2 minutes and 30 second max time with 1 minute and 30 seconds allowed to perform to music.

The Game Day format for Regionals and Finals will be a combination of band chant, a situational sideline led by a cue from the announcer which moves into the crowd leading section and ending with your fight song.  Teams are permitted, but not required, to use camp material to demonstrate the game day environment at their school. With all elements combined, the Game Day Routine cannot exceed a 3 minute time limit. Please follow skill restrictions below.

All teams will begin with a BAND CHANT followed by an offensive or defensive cue led by the announcer in which the teams will answer definitively with their offensive or defensive sideline. This will lead them into their choice of CROWD LEADING section. All teams will end with their FIGHT SONG. The fight song should represent the traditional fight song your school has always done at games. Teams can incorporate up to three consecutive 8-counts of crowd effective stunts, tumbling, and/or jumps and can include spirit raising props to enhance the overall effect. For teams that do not have an official fight song, it is recommended to use a second selection of band chant music. Music guidelines are available at varsity.com.

Skill Restrictions:

BAND CHANTS- no partner stunts or tumbling permitted. Kicks and jumps are allowed.

CROWD LEADING and FIGHT SONG

- Single leg skills are limited to liberty and hitch position.

- Running tumbling is prohibited.

- Standing tumbling skills are limited to single skills. No connections or jump-tumble combinations are permitted. (Most difficult skill = back tuck) *safety guideline posted since July 2018

2017: Sparkman Captures Co-Ed Cheer Title; Seven Class Champions Crowned at Competition

HANCEVILLE – Nine state champions were crowned at the State Cheerleading Competition administered by Varsity Brands at Wallace-Hanceville Community College Saturday.
A state champion was named in each of the seven classifications of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) and one champion was selected in the Co-Ed competition.

Sparkman High School was named the Co-Ed champion with Thompson the runner-up. Mary Montgomery captured the non-build division and R.A. Hubbard was second.
The Class 7A state championship ended with the judges deadlocked between Vestavia Hills (359.20) and Hoover (359.20), both tying with the best team score of the day. The Rebels won the title, however, in the tie breaker. The Bucs finished second.
Meek won the 1A title with a narrow win over Ragland. Only .40 separated the two top finishers in the AHSAA’s smallest division. A record number of teams competed in this year’s championships.
